Sustainable Wellness – A New Year’s Resolution for 2012
Have you ever noticed that most New Year’s resolutions are related to a desire for better health? Pledges to lose weight, exercise more, eat better or meditate more regularly abound this time of year. What most people don’t realize is that any promise to improve your health will always be easier to keep if you include regular chiropractic and naturopathic care. Including natural health maintenance in your New Year’s resolution has never been easier. Here at the Pomperaug Chiropractic and Holistic Center we offer you numerous opportunities to maximize your health with a full spectrum of natural health care services—and it has never been more affordable!
Did you know that people who utilize regular chiropractic and naturopathic health care use less medications and are less likely to have surgery than those who don’t? Let’s first look at the benefits of regular chiropractic wellness care. Some people ask us, “Why would I need chiropractic adjustments if I don’t have pain?” This is like asking “why should I brush my teeth and have regular dental check-ups if I don’t have a toothache!” Regular chiropractic wellness adjustments allow you to function at an optimum level of mechanical and neurological performance and often prevent injuries. For example many people find themselves sitting for hours each day. They sit to drive to work or the market, they sit at their computers or at the TV, they sit to eat their meals and to read. Research has shown that prolonged static postures, such as sitting, leads to a hastening of spinal degeneration. Motion is required to optimize blood flow to the spinal discs and ligaments. The following comment by James Iatridis, PhD – Professor of Engineering and Orthopedics at the University of Vermont, says it all!
“Back pain is not the evolutionary cost of standing erect, but the cost of sitting
in a chair all day-the outcome of our current social patterns.”
Dr. Iatridis is the winner of the prestigious PECASE award in 2008 for his work on back pain and human disc degeneration. So what can we do about all of this sitting and the inevitable spinal degeneration that results?
First and foremost we need to be more active. Regular chiropractic adjustments are a way to improve the mobility of all of the joints of the body especially the spinal joints. When the joints of the spine and pelvis are well maintained the body is capable of pain-free movement and, what most people don’t realize is, a spine that is moving well is less likely to degenerate and will allow the spinal nerves to bring critical messages to all of the parts of the body optimizing health. Movement is the key to life. Most people know intuitively that the downward slide of sickness and disease often begins with a sedentary lifestyle.
In addition to utilizing regular chiropractic care to maintain an optimum state of physical activity, our wellbeing depends on good nutrition and gastrointestinal health as well as the ability to maintain an emotional and spiritual balance despite the stressors of our contemporary world. In the search for optimal health many turn to their family doctor for guidance only to walk away disappointed when they realize that their medical doctor—although highly trained in saving lives with acute care medicine—is often unprepared to help patients who are looking to create and maintain an optimal state of wellness. This is where more and more educated healthcare consumers are turning toward Naturopathic Medicine for help in achieving their health and wellness goals. Dr. Jason Culp is our new Naturopathic Physician here at the Pomperaug Chiropractic and Holistic Center.
It is Dr. Culp’s goal to work with his patients and bring about a foundation for sustainable wellness through all avenues of life by promoting healthful life choices and avoidance of preventable disease. “By following a naturopathic lifestyle, you can bring balance and harmony into your life. Naturopathy is not just for people who are ill, but it is a way of life that can promote abundant life force and vitality. By addressing your diet, exercise routine, lifestyle, work-life balance and your emotional well-being, you can revitalize your body and your mind!”
